We hope everyone is having a great week! Yesterday evening our kids wanted to make some Cinnamon Swirl Bread, and we obliged! I mean, who doesn’t absolutely love fresh baked, homemade bread!!? The smell, the texture, the taste!!! AAAHH!! We love it!
We figured we’d share how we prepare and bake our Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread! It’s easier than you might think, so give it a try! Below is a step-by-step recipe, along with photographs of most of the steps!

- 1 packet of active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 cup milk.
- 1 stick of butter (1/2 cup).
- 3 tablespoons sugar.
- 1 teaspoon salt.
- 3 cups flour + some for the counter.
- 1/3 cup sugar.
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon.
- 2 eggs.
Begin by setting out 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast. If it has been in the refrigerator it’s best to let the yeast come to room temp prior to blooming it.
Now heat up 1 cup of milk (whatever kind you have) til it’s rather warm to the touch. I do not have a temperature, I just feel it out each time. If it’s too hot to touch, then it’s too hot for the yeast. Also melt a 1/2 stick of butter in another bowl.
Now add the butter and milk to a larger bowl with 3 tablespoons of sugar. Mix this lightly until the sugar has combined with the milk and butter. Now add your yeast, and lightly stir the yeast into the mixture.
Now wait 10 minutes to allow the yeast to bloom. It should begin looking like this after about 1-2 minutes…
Then this after about 10 minutes…
Now add 1 teaspoon of salt to the bowl.
And one beaten egg.
Now add 2 1/2 cups of flour to the bowl.
Now begin mixing the contents by hand. You can also do this in a stand mixer if you have one. The kids wanted to do this by hand.
The goal here is a wet dough. Remember, you can always add flour to your dough, but you can’t take flour out. So don’t worry if it’s sticky, that’s part of the fun of it!
Now flour the surface of your counter and scoop the dough out onto it.
Begin kneading the dough, adding flour slowly as you go, until it becomes a smooth consistency.
A good way to know when you’re dough is ready is you can lightly push your finger into it and the dough bounces back a little. Once it’s ready, shape it into a ball.
Now oil a large bowl and place the dough into the bowl. Make sure the dough is lightly covered in oil as well.
Now cover the bowl with plastic wrap. The purpose of covering dough during it’s rise is to limit the amount of air that passes over the top of the dough. We don’t want the dough to get a hard shell, which would prevent optimum rise.
Now wait approximately 1 hour or until your dough has doubled in size.
Now flour your counter surface again, and place the dough onto it.
Give the dough another 2 to 3 minutes of kneading, which will help to prepare it for rolling.
Now began rolling out your dough to approximately 1/4 inch of thickness. Try not to make it too long, and try to keep it close to the width dimensions of your bread pan.
Once the dough is rolled out, take a half stick of room temp butter and put it in the middle of the dough.
Now spread the butter evenly across the entire piece of dough. This is why room temp butter is important. (Tip: Don’t use melted butter. The heat of the melted butter can prevent the interior of the loaf from rising during it’s final bake.)
Now take 1/3 cup sugar, and mix with 1 tablespoon cinnamon.
Take that mixture and spread it evenly it across the entire piece of dough.
Now you can begin rolling. Remember that as you roll the dough, start from the bottom and lightly pull each roll towards you to help stretch the dough a little. This will help create tighter swirls, which we all want!
Once it’s rolled, oil your bread bad and place the loaf into the pan.
Again, cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for approximately 1 hour, or until the bread has risen 1 to 2 inches over the top of the pan.
When the bread is ready for baking, create an egg wash by taking one egg and beating it in a bowl. Now spread the egg wash lightly over the top of the loaf.
You just want a very thin coating of egg wash. Not too much.
Now place your dough in a 375 degree oven and let is bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Keep an eye on it after the 35 minute mark, just making sure it doesn’t burn. If it starts getting too dark on top, just put a piece of aluminum foil on it.
